If you’re a new mum wondering whether lactation cookies actually do anything — or whether they’re just a very clever excuse to eat cookies in the name of breastfeeding — fair question.
They’re one of the most common things we get asked about.
The short answer? They can be a helpful part of supporting lactation — but they’re not magic in the silver bullet sense.
And honestly, we think that’s a much better place to start.
What Are Lactation Cookies?
Good quality lactation cookies are nutrient-dense baked goods made with ingredients traditionally used to support breastfeeding and milk production.
Many contain ingredients known as galactagogues — foods, herbs or other substances used with the intention of supporting milk supply.
That doesn’t mean eating one cookie will suddenly have you producing enough milk to supply the neighbourhood.
Milk production is influenced by a whole range of things, including feeding frequency, effective milk removal, hormones, nutrition, hydration, sleep, stress and individual physiology.
But certain foods and herbs have been used by breastfeeding women for generations, and have emerging research behind them too.
So rather than thinking of lactation cookies as a miracle cure, we prefer to think of them as one useful little tool in the breastfeeding-support toolbox.
A particularly delicious tool, admittedly.

The Ingredients That Matter
Not all lactation cookies are created equal.
Some are essentially regular cookies with a teaspoon of brewer’s yeast added and a very ambitious marketing department.
We like to take a slightly more thoughtful approach.
Here are some of the ingredients traditionally associated with lactation support:
Oats
Oats are probably one of the best-known foods associated with breastfeeding.
They’re naturally rich in complex carbohydrates and fibre, including beta-glucan, and provide nutrients such as iron.
While we don’t have strong clinical evidence proving that oats directly increase milk supply, they’ve long been used as a nourishing food for breastfeeding women — and they’re a pretty excellent base for a substantial cookie too.
Brewer’s Yeast
Brewer’s yeast is another classic lactation-cookie ingredient.
It contains protein, B vitamins and minerals, with the exact nutritional profile varying between products.
It has a long history of use in foods intended to support breastfeeding, although research specifically showing that brewer’s yeast increases milk production is still limited.
Flaxseed
Flaxseed provides fibre, plant-based omega-3 fats and lignans — naturally occurring plant compounds with phytoestrogenic activity.
It’s commonly included in lactation foods and adds a whole lot more than just “lactation cookie credentials” to the nutritional profile.
Fennel
Fennel has been used traditionally as a galactagogue for a very long time.
Its seeds contain compounds including anethole, which has phytoestrogenic activity, and some small studies have suggested fennel may have a role in supporting lactation.
The research is still limited — but fennel remains one of the better-known traditional herbs used by breastfeeding women.
It also happens to pair extremely well with ginger and chocolate, which is arguably equally important information.
Fenugreek
Fenugreek is probably one of the most famous herbal galactagogues.
Some women report noticeable improvements in supply when using it, while research results are mixed and it doesn’t suit everyone.
Like most herbs, it isn’t automatically appropriate just because it’s natural, particularly if you have certain health conditions or take medication.
Which brings us back to the recurring theme here: individual bodies are individual.

So... Do Lactation Cookies Work?
Potentially. The key word is supportive.
And we think that’s a much more accurate answer than either “YES, GUARANTEED MILK SUPPLY!” or “there’s no point eating them at all.”
Research into lactation foods and herbal galactagogues is still developing, and responses vary enormously between women. That’s useful information — but it’s also only one piece of a much bigger picture.
It doesn’t tell us that traditional lactation foods have no value, nor does it mean every woman will respond in exactly the same way.
What we can confidently say is that milk supply is complex, and no single cookie can replace the fundamentals of breastfeeding support.
If you’re genuinely worried about your supply, getting help with feeding, latch and milk removal from a qualified lactation professional is always worthwhile.
Cookies Work Best Alongside Good Foundations
Lactation cookies make the most sense as part of the bigger picture. Frequent and effective feeding or pumping remains one of the most important drivers of milk production.
And then there’s the less glamorous side of breastfeeding: you need feeding too. Producing breastmilk requires energy, and the postpartum period isn’t exactly famous for providing long stretches of peaceful meal preparation.
Sometimes you’re nap-trapped on the couch. Sometimes the baby has decided feeding is now a 47-minute event. Sometimes you’ve made a beautiful cup of tea and reheated it three times. And sometimes lunch is simply whatever you can reach with one arm.
This is where we think lactation cookies really earn their keep.
A good one should be substantial, nourishing, easy to grab, easy to eat one-handed, and made with ingredients chosen specifically with breastfeeding women in mind.
Not just a sugary biscuit wearing a wellness hat.
